External Applications in Anthroposophic Nursing

Rhythmical Spleen Embrocation with Copper

Kind of substance

Red Copper Ointment (WALA)

Guiding principle for the application

External rhythms, such as waking and sleeping or keeping to regular mealtimes, demand a lot of discipline in our time. The task of the spleen is to compensate for irregularities, so that the internal organs can work in a well-regulated way.

The spleen generates the strongest purification forces to counter pathogens and allergens in the circulating blood. At the same time it eliminates old blood cells and thereby continuously renews the blood.
Healthy spleen functioning can compensate for the detrimental effects of irregular eating habits and poorly tolerated foods. According to Rudolf Steiner a healthy spleen can awaken an instinct for the indigestibility of certain foodstuffs or alcoholic beverages, etc.

Rhythmical embrocation of the spleen has a strong warming effect, its makes the digestive process more rhythmic and encourages a sense for a healthy nutritional rhythm that includes intervals in which the food can be completely digested. The aim is to support the organ with rhythmic, warming rhythmical embrocation.

“Copper, applied externally, promotes blood flow from the periphery and proper warmth distribution between periphery and center.” (1)

Case example

A 16-year-old patient with asthma and allergies was to receive a series of rhythmical spleen embrocations. Each spleen treatment should be preceded by a rhythmical embrocation of the feet and calves with lemon oil to support warmth generation. The therapist had the impression that it would help the patient to combine the spleen treatment with inner concentration. It was possible to draw her in with the suggestion of imagining the place of her complete health in her mind’s eye. We agreed that she would visit an “inner place” (her source of strength) meditatively several times a day and especially in the evening before going to sleep.
5 weeks later there was a first clear improvement. After the 10th application she was almost symptom-free and her limbs had warmed up. The treatment is now completed after the 10th rhythmical spleen embrocation. The patient’s health is much better and her medication has been greatly reduced. She had already resigned herself to her allergies and asthma and was therefore very happy about this success. Her limbs are warm now.
This time was characterized by intensive development of soul and spirit.
Through her progressive revitalization, she was able to use the resources released. She developed prospects for her future profession after finishing school – without having to consider negative health burdens.
Her mother confirmed her daughter’s positive course of treatment and expressed her joy and gratitude.

Based on her medical experience, the anthroposophic general practitioner treating the patient is certain that the status quo achieved was not necessarily the result of the desensitization treatment (conventional medicine) carried out last autumn, but the spleen treatments with rhythmical embrocation.
