Guiding principle

Sage belongs to the family of labiates (Lamiaceae), comes from the Mediterranean region and loves dry, sunny soils. Of the more than 850 species, only Sage officinalis is used as a medicinal plant. It has an unmistakable smell and taste and has been used as a spice since time immemorial. As a subshrub, up to 70 cm tall, it has long, rugose grey-green leaves with many short, soft hairs.
The essential oils, thujone, bitter substances and tanning agents contained in sage oil have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal effects. Sage oil has a spasmolytic effect on the gastrointestinal tract, gall bladder and urinary bladder. It is also used to treat inflammation of the mouth and throat, as well as excessive perspiration that accompanies vegetative or climacteric complaints.
